Media Statement WESTERN CAPE – The swift response of police members, fulfilling their mandate to combat crime, led to the detention of two males in possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, the possession of a hijacked vehicle and attack on police in isolated incidents on Thursday, 05 September 2024. Police members attached to the Anti-Gang unit responded to information and approached an address in Dulles Street in Hague, Delft. The members entered the premises at around 23:40 and ensued with a search which led to the recovery of a shotgun. They detained a 37-year-old man for the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. Meanwhile, Provincial K9 members conducted patrols in Samora Machel when they saw a suspicious white Toyota Avanza. They instructed the driver to stop, who disobeyed the instruction. This action resulted in a high speed chase with the occupants who opened fire on the police members who retaliated. The driver of the mentioned vehicle was hit and lost control of the vehicle which collided with an object next to the road. The other occupants fled on foot. The police members searched the driver and found him in possession of a pistol with ammunition. Further investigation revealed that the vehicle was hijacked in Lentegeur. They detained an adult male for the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, attack on police and the possession of a hijacked vehicle.
Once charged, the suspects are expected to make their respective court appearances in the Bellville and Athlone Magistrates’ court on the mentioned charges.
