The National Intervention Unit (NIU) team followed up an information about a man who was in possession of an unlicensed firearm in a house at Nkume Street, NU 11, Motherwell. They proceeded to the address, as soon as the front door was opened, the suspect saw police and pointed the members with a gun. The members retaliated and the suspect succumbed to death due to the injuries. The suspect is not linked to the robbery that occurred recently in one of the shopping malls at Gqeberha, however police investigation is ongoing. Police confiscated the firearm and ammunition that was in his possession, as well as a signal jammer that was found in the house. The cases of pointing of firearm, inquest, possession of unlicensed firearm, and ammunition were opened for investigation at SAPS Motherwell. The inquest docket will be transferred to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate for further investigation The Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner Major General Vuyisile Ncata is thanking the community for sharing valuable information as at least one firearm is off the streets. “Police will continue in combating crime and eradicating criminal activities in the Bay and will ensure that perpetrators are behind bars,” he concluded Ends
