Media Statement PRETORIA – The South African Police Service (SAPS) will host its annual Commemoration Day to honour and pay tribute to women and men in blue who died in the line of duty between April 2023 to March 2024. As a build up to the Commemoration Day that will be held at the Union Buildings on 01 September 2024, the SAPS will honour 39 members who died during this period. Today we pay tribute to our fallen hero, the late Sergeant Sinoxolo Tatani-Nkomo who died on 28 January 2024. The 36-year-old member was attached to the Kidds Beach police station in the Eastern Cape province and had 14 years of service in the organisation at the time of her passing. It was on 28th of January 2024, when the member was fatally shot by an unknown suspect at Settlers Way in the Eastern Cape province. The tragic incident happened, when the member and her crew members were travelling together when their police vehicle suffered a tyre puncture at Settlers Way. While the members were waiting for help, an ex-police officer pulled over next to them to offer help but he was unable to fix the tyre puncture. He then offered them a shelter in his vehicle while waiting for assistance. A BMW vehicle pulled over next to the police vehicle and the suspects fired shots at them, killing the member instantly together with the ex-police officer. Both the member and ex-police were declared deceased on the scene. Police have opened two cases of murder and police investigation continues. She leaves behind her husband and three children, the youngest being four years old at the time of their mother’s passing. Sergeant Tatani- Nkomo’s name and thirty eight others will be engraved on the SAPS memorial wall at the Union Buildings on the 1st of September 2024, as a symbol of gratitude from the nation for the sacrifices he made in serving and protecting the people of this country until his last breath. To Sergeant Tatani- Nkomo, the SAPS flag does not fly because the wind blows it: it flies with the last breath of every police officer who died defending it. May your soul continue to rest in peace. Ends
