POLOKWANE – The multidisciplinary forces under operation Vala Umgodi as part of fighting illegal mining in the province are on regular basis visiting, inspecting, and monitoring all illegal mining sites across the province. On 28 August 2024 an integrated operation compromising SAPS Waterburg various components and units, including the Air wing conducted an intelligence led operation at Makapan after receiving a tip-off on illegal mining activities in the area. The team went to Makapan Amatava goldmine in the Waterburg District. The illegal mining site is situated on top of the mountain and the team deployed the drone to conduct observation and some suspicious structures were observed. The team ascended the mountain and no suspect was found but the following items were confiscated: – * 08 × black hammers * 10 × Chisels * 02 × Spade * 01 × Yellow rake * 01 × Hand saw * 01 × Sift * 01 × pipe * 01 × Digging Fork * 01 × 20L Buckets containing metal stones. * 01 × 12 meters detonating cord explosive. * 01 × 28MM super power blasting cartridge – explosive and * 01 × Remnant of durafuse. By confiscating these illegal mining implements, we gradually crippling and dismantling the illegal mining activities. Ends
