POLOKWANE – Seshego Regional Court convicted and sentenced Ngwako John Molele (33) to 20 years imprisonment for rape. The conviction and sentencing was meted out on Thursday, 29 August 2024. The court heard that on 15 May, 2022, the victim was on her way home coming from the tuckshop when she met the unknown accused, and he dragged her to the passage, and demanded that the victim have sex with him. The victim refused, and the accused threatened her with a knife. He proceeded to rape her. The victim was able to push him away and escaped to get assistance to the closest health centre and also to report the incident to the police. A rape case was opened. The docket was assigned to Warrant Officer Mosebjadi Lefowa. Through her meticulous investigation skills, she managed to track down and arrest the suspect, and he remained in custody after his bail was opposed by investigating officer warrant officer Lefowa. The accused was linked through DNA after being arrested on 18 May 2022.
The accused was found guilty on Wednesday, 24 July 2024, and sentenced on Thursday 29 August 2024 as follows: Rape: 20 years’ imprisonment Orders 1. In terms of Section 103(1) of the Firearms Control Act 60 of 2000, the accused is deemed unfit to possess a firearm, and no order is accordingly made. 2. An additional order was made on terms 103(4) of Act 60 of 2000 for the search and seizure of all firearms and permits in the possession of the accused. 3. In terms of Section 50(2)(a)(i) of Act, the court orders that the particulars of the accused be included in the National Register for sexual offenses. 4. In terms of Section 120(4) of Act 38 of 2005, the accused is found unsuitable to work with children, and his particulars must be included in Part B of the National Children Protection Register. The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service welcomed the sentencing meted out by the Seshego Regional Court and praised the investigating officer and her team for ensuring that the victim received closure and justice was served on GBVF victims.
