Media Statement CAPE TOWN – Following an extensive investigation into the discovery of the body of a 16-year-old learner from the premises of a school in Caledon a week ago, Serious Violent Crimes detectives have made a breakthrough and arrested a suspect. Deveney Nel was reported missing after failing to return from school. An extensive search was henceforth launched. The 17-year-old suspect was arrested by the detectives on Friday evening and charged with murder. He is expected to appear in the Caledon Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 19 August 2024. Since the discovery of the body of the female learner, serious violent crimes detectives have been hard at work pursuing several leads. Western Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lt General Thembisile Patekile has applauded the SVC team on the breakthrough as the fight against crimes targeting women, children and other vulnerable groups intensifies. “We will spare no resources in getting to the perpetrators of crime. Gender-based violence and femicide is a priority for the South African Police Service. Hence we welcome this arrest “says Lt General Patekile. Ends
