KIMBERLEY – The SAPS Management welcomed the prison sentence handed down to 21-year-old David van Wyk for tampering with essential infrastructure. On Saturday, 02 March 2024, the accused was found cutting the signal cable of a Transnet railway line in Cassandra, Kimberley. He was subsequently arrested, and bail was successfully opposed. The Kimberley Magistrate Court on Monday, 26 August 2024, convicted and sentenced the accused to fourteen (14) years and six (6) months imprisonment. The Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Luntu Ngubelanga, applauded Sergeant Orapeleng Mosala of Provincial Organised Crime for his meticulous investigative work and for securing the conviction and sentence. Maj Gen Ngubelanga reiterated that crimes related to the tampering of essential infrastructure remains one of the priorities of the organisation in the province, and the police will display a zero tolerance approach to ensure the safety of essential keypoints.
