Media Statement
It alleged that on 19 October 2020 in the afternoon, two G4S cash trucks were coming from collecting cash at Lusikisiki and Port St John’s enroute to their base at Mthatha where they were reportedly accosted by two groups of heavily armed suspects with firearms. The suspects reportedly stopped the cash trucks and instructed the guards to come out from the trucks and then bombed one truck. Further allegations indicated that, during the process while the suspects were trying to explode the second truck, police arrived and a shootout ensued between the police and the suspects. Subsequently, the suspects allegedly fled from the scene with an undisclosed large amount of money. It is further alleged that the police gave chase where at Mhlakulo junction, a police officer was fatally wounded. The search continued where one of the suspects was reportedly injured and arrested the following day at the nearby forest. Later on, during the day of the incident, few metres away from the forest, one of the vehicles that was reported to have been used by the suspects was also found abandoned. Thorough intensive investigations by the Mthatha Serious Organised Crime Investigation led to the arrest of Bakali in Durban on 21 August 2024 and appeared before Tsolo Magistrate’s on 23 August 2024. The matter was remanded to 27 August 2024 for legal representation and formal bail application. Bakali will join his co-accused on the day and remains in custody.
