Media Statement POLOKWANE – The multidisciplinary forces under Operation Vala Umgodi arrested 13 suspects aged between 18 and 63 for illegal mining on Thursday, 15 August 2024, near Lekgalametse Game Reserve in Masoma village, in Maake policing area under Mopani District. The operation was conducted by the Mopani District Illicit Mining Task Team, joined by other SAPS components, Airwing, and the SANDF members. A group of suspects was spotted busy with their illegal mining activities at the illegal mining site. Seemingly the suspects noticed the law enforcement officers and started to run in different directions. The operational members managed to corner them, and the suspects failed to produce an authentic permit to operate at the mine. They were immediately apprehended. During the arrest, the following items, including cellphones of the suspects, were seized: Four picks Three spades Three shovels One hammer One DHN generator One water pipe One head lamp One scale The 13 suspects will appear before the local Magistrate’s Magistrate court soon.
