CLARENS – The Clarens police are investigating a case of murder, attempted murder and theft of a firearm after a 54-year-old man from Kgubetswana near Clarens was found on Drakensberg mountain with fatal gunshot wounds and his private firearm, suspected to have been stolen by stock thieves during the shooting. It is alleged that between Friday, 03 August and Saturday 04 August 2024, police received a complaint about the theft of 19 cattle from a farm in the Thabo Mofutsanyane District. As a result, the local Kgubetswana livestock owners who usually voluntarily assist in livestock recoveries were activated. One of the members, aged 54, together with three shepherds followed up on the cattle tracks which led them to the Drakensberg mountain. It is alleged that they spotted the cattle and the thieves, but unfortunately the cattle thieves started shooting towards them and he was shot in the process. The other shepherds, upon seeing that he was shot, rushed back to the local police to seek assistance, but it was too late. Later, the police arrived at the crime scene and found the deceased with fatal bullet wounds and was declared dead at the scene. It is further alleged that his private firearm is suspected to be stolen. Only two cattle have been recovered, but the other 17 are still missing. A case of murder, attempted murder, and theft of a firearm is being investigated. Any person with information that may lead to the arrest and conviction of the suspects can contact the Clarens Police at (058) 256-6000/01 or Crime Stop at 08600 10111. Ends
