WESTERN CAPE – Concerted efforts to curb the influx of illicit drugs into the Western Cape with the strategic deployment of police along highways and secondary routes once again paid dividends with the interception of a consignment of drugs with an estimated street value of R340 000-00 on the N2 highway at the entrance to George. On Wednesday, 17 July 2024 Garden Route District Crime Combatting Team and Flying Squad members responded to information about a blue Lexus vehicle with Gauteng Province registration plates that is enroute from the Eastern Cape with drugs on board. The team deployed themselves along the highway and spotted the vehicle entering the coastal town. They brought the vehicle to a halt and a search ensued when a plastic bag containing 979 grams of tik (Methamphetamine) was found stashed under the passenger seat. The vigilant members confiscated the find and arrested the driver for dealing in drugs. Police also seized the vehicle. Western Cape Provincial Detectives Organised Crime (Narcotics) are investigating the matter. Preliminary investigation suggests that the drugs were destined for delivery in George. The suspect, a 55-year-old Tanzanian national, is in police custody. He is expected to make his first appearance in George Magistrates’ Court on Friday 19 July 2024. In an unrelated matter, the same team operationalised information when they raided a house at Vuyani Ncamazana Street, Lawaaikamp near Conville in George on Monday, 15 July 2024. A search of the premises resulted in the confiscation of 564 mandrax tablets and 66 grams of tik estimated at R66 000. Police confiscated the drugs and arrested a 39-year-old man also on a charge of dealing in drugs. Western Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General (Adv.) Thembisile Patekile lauded the members for their efforts to rid communities of drugs. Ends
