Media Statement PARKTOWN – The Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni recently spearheaded a successful High-Density Operation across all policing districts in Gauteng. The operation resulted in the arrest of over 1,000 suspects who were involved in various serious crimes including murder, attempted murder, rape, business robbery, drug dealing, possession of drugs, assault, hijacking, possession of unlicensed firearms, and ammunition. The multi-disciplinary operation involved the Departments such as Home Affairs, Correctional Services, other law enforcement agencies, Gauteng Crime Prevention Wardens, members Community Policing Forums, and private securities. The operations commenced on Saturday, 03 August 2024 with strategic roadblocks and targeted raids focusing on capturing wanted suspects. Detectives across the province arrested over 700 wanted suspects for various crimes with 155 arrests being related to gender-based violence. Through coordination, law enforcements located and apprehended suspects across different parts of Gauteng, preventing any attempt to evade the law. The Provincial Commissioner took charge of the roadblock in Malibongwe Drive in Cosmo City and Honeydew, Johannesburg District, where violent crimes such as murder, assault, hijacking, and robbery are prevalent. The parallel high-density operations in all other districts resulted in 120 suspects being apprehended for driving under the influence of alcohol, 191 were illegal immigrants, 19 were involved in drug dealing, one for employing illegal immigrants, one for possession of precious metals, and 19 unlicensed liquor outlets were closed for not complying with the regulations.
The High-Density Operation is set to continue until a substantial reduction in crime is achieved in Gauteng. All these suspects will soon appear before various provincial Magistrates’ Courts.
