Media Statement KIMBERLEY – The safeguarding and securing of essential infrastructure remains a priority for the SAPS in the Northern Cape, thus the sentencing of James Klein (50) was embraced by the Management. On Monday, 29 July 2024, the Calvinia Regional Court convicted and sentenced Klein to ten (10) years imprisonment for the damaging of essential infrastructure of which four (4) years is suspended for five (5) years. The accused was also declared unfit to possess a firearm. The court heard that on Monday, 19 February 2024, an incident was reported to the Brandvlei police regarding the burning of copper cables. Upon further investigation, the accused was found in possession of copper cable that he was burning, he was subsequently arrested. It was established that the cables were the property of Telkom. Detective Sergeant Lwazi Ngindana was assigned to investigate the case, he successfully managed to oppose bail, and the accused remained in custody until his sentencing. The police encourage communities to continue report reporting criminal activities that relate to the damaging or tampering of essential infrastructure.
Detective Sergeant Ngindana was commended for the meticulous investigation that led to the sentencing of the perpetrator.
