Media Statement POLOKWANE – The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has strongly condemned the senseless attack on an off-duty police officer after he was stabbed by an alleged suspect in a case the officer was investigating. The officer, a dedicated and experienced member of the SAPS, was attacked in Polokwane CBD on Thursday night, 01 August 2024. The suspect allegedly approached him while standing next to his vehicle, stabbed him and removed the car keys from the ignition before fleeing the scene. The courageous Police Detective, who had sustained injuries, gave chase until he caught the suspect where a physical altercation ensued. The community promptly responded after noticing the commotion and assisted the victim. The suspect was apprehended, and the injured police officer was transported to the hospital. The Police have opened a case of theft out of motor vehicle and attempted murder. The Provincial Commissioner has expressed outrage at the brazen attack, saying: “We will not tolerate such barbaric acts of violence against our members. The positive response of our community members is highly commendable, and we are forever indebted to them for not turning a blind eye on the situation but assisting our member. We will ensure the suspect faces the full might of the law,” concluded Lieutenant General Hadebe. The officer is currently receiving medical attention and is in a stable condition.
The 34-year-old suspect is expected to appear before Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 05 August 2024.
