Media Statement PRETORIA – A suspect was shot and killed in a shootout with a multi-disciplinary team in an informal settlement in Ekurhuleni. It is reported that information was received which prompted an intelligence driven operation on getting rid of illegal firearms. The team which includes Tactical Operations Management Section of the Hawks, SAPS HQ Crime Intelligence, Ekurhuleni Tactical Response Team and Netcare Paramedics received information of suspects having illegal firearms used in illegal mining activities. The intelligence was followed up to F20 Marathon informal settlement in Primrose. Upon arrival, the team identified themselves but were met with fire. They returned fire, fatally wounding a suspect. An assortment of various calibre ammunition and an unlicensed 9mm firearm were recovered on the scene. An inquest and attempted murder dockets were opened for investigation.
The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation is not ruling out the possibility of more suspects being arrested.
