Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation WESTERN CAPE – The Western Provincial Head of the Hawks, Major General Makgato has welcomed the sentencing of Aviwe Ndwanyana (27) to life imprisonment for the murder of a police officer. The sentence was handed down by the Western Cape division of the High Court on 31 July 2024 after he was found guilty on 18 June 2024. The sentence was imposed as follows: Count 1: murder to life imprisonment. Count 2: attempted robbery with aggravating circumstances to 15 years direct imprisonment. Count 3: possession of firearm without license to 5 years direct imprisonment. Count 4: possession of ammunition without license to 5 years direct imprisonment. Count 5: pointing of firearm to 18 months direct imprisonment. The court ordered that sentences imposed on counts 3,4 and 5 will run concurrently. Ndwanyana will effectively serve life imprisonment and 20 years. This emanates from June 2020 when members from Nyanga Crime Prevention Unit were executing their duties in New Rest Squatter Camp, Nyanga. As they were searching one the premises, they were ambushed by a suspect who shot Constable Siyoko. She passed away on arrival at the hospital.
The team comprising of the Hawks, Nyanga SAPS members and Crime Intelligence immediately launched a manhunt and Ndwanyana was subsequently arrested on 8 June 2020. He was remanded in custody until his sentence.
