Media Statement GAUTENG – Portia Mathenjwa (42) has been convicted and sentenced by the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court recently for disability grant fraud, which started in 2009. A case of fraud was registered at Mamelodi police station during June 2020, and assigned to the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime investigators. Mathenjwa was an employee of the South African Social Security Agency at the time. She applied and approved disability grant for her alleged boyfriend starting in 2009 July until May 2018. She was arrested on 30 March 2023.
The court has on Friday, 26 July sentenced Mathenjwa on 108 counts of fraud. All counts were taken together for the purpose of sentence: Three(3) years imprisonment, the sentence was however wholly suspended for five(5) years on condition the accused is not convicted of committing the offence of fraud or theft during the period of suspension.
