Media Statement GAUTENG – The Provincial Head of the Hawks in Gauteng , Major General Ebrahim Kadwa, has welcomed the charges against former Transnet executive managers Lerato Makenete (59), and Hawkins Madubane (55 ), along with service providers, Jacob Malusi Ramoyadi (41), Kenneth Rikhotso (44), with their companies, Ramoyadi Air Conditioning and Electrical and Ndzalo 2 Trading respectively. The four appeared in court on Tuesday, 23 July 2024, in the Johannesburg Specialised Commercial Crimes Court following their arrest on the same day. It is the State’s case that, at the time, the former Transnet executive managers were responsible for Transnet’s group business continuity and disaster management and safety, respectively. They reportedly conspired with service providers to supply over one million disposable alcohol breathalyser straws at inflated prices. Transnet was charged inflated amount per straw which resulted in a total payment of over R33 million during the Covid-19 pandemic. They are faced with charges that include fraud, theft and money laundering in terms of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act (POCA). This would undoubtedly leave them clutching at straws as investigations by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Crime investigation continues. A case was registered at Midrand police station in June 2023. It has thus far revealed that the accused failed to follow procurement procedures and did not disclose their associations with the procurement companies. Their case has been adjourned until Wednesday, 04 September 2024, for the disclosure of the docket contents. They were released on R10 000 bail each with strict conditions, which include not interfering with investigations and witnesses. Ends
