KIMBERLEY – Police in the Northern Cape heeded to the call of getting involved and participating in activities to combat poverty and inequity in our society by conducting several outreach activities to honour the vision of Nelson Mandela. The Provincial Crime Detection Components respected the legacy of Mandela Day and dedicated their 67 minutes to the Sol Plaatje Primary School in Galeshewe, Kimberley by highlighting educational support. On Thursday, 18 July 2024, the Mandela Day Celebrations started with an opening devotion by Constable Desmond Maruping while the welcoming address was delivered by the School Principal Patrick Mangate. Col Lizelda Raymond outlined the purpose of the day and background of Mandela Day. The famous quote by Nelson Mandela was shared with the learners, “Education is the most powerful weapon to change the world “. Members from Organized Crime Investigations, Sgt Neil Jacobs and Sgt Aobakwe Merementsi illustrated the dangers of drugs to the 164 Grade 7 learners. An informative presentation was done by Captain McKenzie Louw and Warrant Officer Daniel Satisfied from Galeshewe Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences(FCS) unit about sexual offences, bullying, child pornography and safety on social media platforms. The Provincial Head for FCS, Brigadier Sipho Kheswa, accompanied by Provincial Commanders, handed over care packs containing toiletries to the scholars. The programme was concluded by the Deputy Principal,Trinity Khosholo who expressed their gratitude and appreciation and uttered the Mandela Day 2024 theme: “It is still in our hands to combat poverty and inequity”. Simultaneously Provincial SAPS Pro-Active Policing also held a Mandela Day at the Thlabologo Inclusive Day Care Centre based at the Helen Joseph Education Centre in Galeshewe. Colonel Sebe Qunta and her members handed out warm blankets to all the children at the daycare centre that caters for children with special needs. Several similar projects will be held across the province, bearing in mind that each individual has the influence to transform South Africa, make a tangible impact, and put an end to poverty. Ends
