Media Statement from the Office of the Minister of Police
WESTERN CAPE – The Minister of Police, Mr Senzo Mchunu, welcomes the sentencing of five accused who were part of a group that robbed a liquor store of R 30 000.00 (Thirty Thousand Rand) and opened fire at police in Zwelethemba, Worcester in the Western Cape; the incident took place in December 2018. The accused, namely: Phikolomzi Mpafa (29), Wiseman Tsehlana (49), Bongani Ngubo (37), Phello Monyake (49) and Eliah Mpiti (54) were collectively sentenced to 545 years imprisonment. The newly appointed Minister welcomed the sentences, and commended the law enforcement agencies for ensuring that criminals are brought to book, stating the following: “This sentence marks a significant victory in our ongoing fight against crime and the protection of our law enforcement officers. In alignment with the priorities of the 7th Administration, we have maintained a zero-tolerance stance towards criminals who attack police officers. An attack on an officer is not just an attack on an individual but an assault on the state and the people of South Africa. This sentencing sends a clear and unequivocal message: criminal acts, especially those that endanger the lives of our police officers, will be met with the full force of the law. Our officers risk their lives daily to protect our communities, and any act of violence against them is an affront to our nation’s security and values. We commend the swift and effective response of the law enforcement agencies involved, particularly the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation for its investigative efficiencies and the judiciary for delivering a verdict that underscores our commitment to justice and the rule of law. Let this serve as a reminder that we will not rest until every corner of South Africa is safe, and every citizen can live without fear. We remain steadfast in our mission to eradicate crime and uphold the integrity of our law enforcement agencies.” Ends
