GAUTENG – Monday 15 July started with a morning dive of 60 minutes under fluctuating circumstances and currents up to a depth of around 15 metres. This exercise gave members chance to practice buoyancy with ascending and descending techniques. Afternoon class started with an in depth presentation on Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (HIRA). On each scene hazards need to be identified and risks need to be mitigated to acceptable levels if possible. Safety comes first which is the responsibility of every member and was an important focus point. The presentation culminated on anchor points in rope rescue. Anchor points are immovable objects which is not always feasible. Using vehicles as anchor points was discussed as an improvisation method where possible.
