ZWELITSHA – The Alfred Nzo District Commissioner Major General Nompumelelo Majikijela has welcomed and praised both the investigation and prosecution for a sterling job that led to sentencing of four (4) suspects aged between 30 and 47 years by Ntabankulu High Court on Thursday, 11 July 2024.
The sentencing follows after the following suspects; The incident occurred on 03 June 2022, when the bodies of the deceased aged between 22 and 30 years were found in different areas and dates with multiple injuries, others were tied with a rope, found floating in the river. A case of murder and kidnapping was opened for further investigation. During investigation Police recovered and confiscated the vehicle (Toyota Fortuner) and bushknive that was used for commission of crime. After a lengthy investigation, all four suspects were arrested on 08 June 2022 and appeared before the KwaBhaca (Mount Frere) magistrate court on 09 June 2022 the Investigating Officer successfully opposed bail and were remanded in custody. The case was then transferred to the High Court for trial on 02 May 2023 and was postponed to 23 October 2023. The case was then on trial on 08 July 2024, and all suspects were found guilty and convicted. On Thursday, 11 July 2024, the Ntabankulu High Court sentenced all accused to undergo imprisonment as follows: Each accused person to undergo life imprisonment for Murder and Mzomhle Magobidladla was also sentenced to 5 and 8 years for Assault GBH and all the counts to run concurrently with life imprisonment.
The District Commissioner Major General Nompumelelo Majikijela applauded the Investigating Officer for the sterling job in investigating the case until the perpetrators are behind bars and that he continued though he was threatened to be killed. This shows that police are dedicated and committed in investigating cases even when the suspects are unknown but still track and bring them to book, she added.
