Media Statement KIMBERLEY – On 11 July 2024, the Mothibistad Regional Court sentenced a 60-year-old man to life imprisonment for the rape of his eight-year-old niece. The court heard that the victim returned to her home in Maruping Village on 10 January 2022 after visiting her grandmother for Christmas. The mother of the victim noticed blood stains on the child’s underwear. When confronted, she revealed that her uncle had raped her when she was visiting her grandmother. The incident occurred on Christmas Day. The matter was reported to the police and the accused was subsequently arrested on 15 January 2022. The accused was found guilty of rape and sentenced to life in prison. He was declared unfit to possess a firearm, and his name is to be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders. Northern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola praised the investigating officer, Detective Constable Lorato Michelle Badukane from the Kuruman Family Violence, Child Protection, Sexual Offences Unit for the meticulous investigation and securing a hefty sentence.
