Media Statement GAUTENG – A (36) year old has been arrested by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation on Wednesday, 03 July 2024 at Fairlands’ Walk Mall for fraud and corruption. The arrest emanates from a complaint received from Westbank Fraud unit about a service provider contracted to Westbank to fix state motor vehicles. It is alleged by the complainant that the service provider approached an employee of Westbank and offered the employee R10 000 gratification in order to claim payment of services by submitting a fraudulent invoice of an amount of R29 762. It is further alleged that the suspect approached the Westbank employee after failing to secure a signature for invoices worth R79 750, this after an SAPS Garage employee in Silverton refused to sign off invoices after discovering that the vehicle spare parts that the suspect claimed to have replaced in state vehicles were in fact not new parts but old parts.
The suspect was arrested after meeting up with the complainant at the Fairlands’ Walk Mall to pay the agreed gratification fee. The suspect is expected to make his first appearance at the Johannesburg Magistrates Court on Friday, 05 July 2024.
