Media Statement CAPE TOWN – Western Cape police members remain focussed in the fight against the illegal distribution of drugs and possession of firearms and ammunition that are contributing to serious and violent crimes in our Province. On Wednesday 26 June 2024 at around 14:30, members attached to National Intervention Unit (NIU) responded to information received about a vehicle driving in the vicinity of Cape Town CBD containing a huge amount of drugs and firearms. The members spotted the vehicle stationary next to a fast food chain restaurant in Darling Street. They approached the vehicle with tinted windows and found one male occupant. The members moved the vehicle to the parade grounds where it was searched. During the search they discovered four firearms, 51 9mm rounds of ammunition, a huge amount of mandrax tablets, cocaine and an undisclosed amount of cash believed to be the proceeds of crime. The members subsequently arrested the 26-year-old male who was found in the vehicle, on charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition and for dealing in drugs. The vehicle was handed in at Stikland as exhibit and for further investigation. The suspect will appear in the Cape Town Magistrates’ Court on the mentioned charges once charged. Ends
