WESTERN CAPE – Members attached to the National Public Order Police based in Cape Town are making inroads in the fight against the proliferation of illegal firearms which pose a threat to the safety of the inhabitants of this province through the confiscation of four firearms and the arrests of suspects who were found in possession of it. Yesterday, Saturday, 22 June 2024 at about 13:15, the members performed targeted stop and search operations in Rusthof in the Strand policing precinct when they accosted three men outside a residence in Jacobs Street. Upon approaching them on foot, a fourth suspect in the backyard suddenly disappeared into the house which created even more suspicion. The members cornered the suspect and searched the premises and the suspect upon which they discovered two firearms with magazines and ammunition. The members confiscated the firearms, a black Formula 9mm KRL, a black Glock 9mm and ammunition as evidence and arrested the 21-year-old suspect. Earlier the same day members attached to POP were deployed to police a funeral of a known gangster who was shot and killed a week ago. During the event members conducted random searches and confiscated two firearms which resulted in the arrests of two adult males. The suspects are scheduled to make their first court appearances in the Strand Magistrates’ court on Monday, 24 June 2024, facing a charge of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. POP members will remain and maintain heightened visibility in the Strand policing precinct area to quell any potential gang related incidents and to bring perpetrators of crime to book. Ends
