JOE GQABI DISTRICT – The participation of SAPS members in the Joe Gqabi District in the interprovincial cross border high density operations yielded significant successes over a four-day period from 18 to 21 June 2024. The operations were held simultaneously in the Eastern, Western, Northern and Free State provinces. Police from the various specialized units and other stakeholders within the district formed part of the operations. Intensive patrols with high visibility could be seen in the hotspot areas. The focus areas included the checking for stolen vehicles, vehicles conveying stock, possession of drugs and unlicensed firearms, the unroadworthiness of vehicles and drunken driving. Daily roadblocks and vehicle check points were held in Venterstad on the R58, Steynsburg R56 Sterkspruit at R726 and R393 to Thaba Lesoba and Aliwal North at the Hertzog Bridge N6. Secondhand goods and spaza shops as well as liquor outlets were visited for compliance inspections. The tracing teams arrested 18 wanted suspects for Assault, housebreaking, robbery, business robbery and stock theft. The following successes were achieved during the operations: Removal and safe disposal of seized counterfeit goods like food products, glue, condoms, energy drinks, tablets and cigarettes and toiletries. The total value of the confiscated products is R32 300 -00. 35 traffic fines issued to the value of R 70 200-00 6 Undocumented persons were identified and arrested. Department of Home Affairs also issued 4 fines to the value of R 8000-00. 19 Livestock and 21 sheep carcasses were confiscated to the value of R100 000. The District Commissioner, Major General Lindelwa Vellem extended her gratitude to all those units, members and external role-players for their outstanding dedication and commitment during the operation. ‘The professionalism, teamwork, and tireless efforts were instrumental in ensuring the success of the operations,’ added Major General Lindelwa Vellem.
