Media Statement FICKSBURG – Police have arrested 54-year-old man from Meqheleng near Ficksburg for alleged attempted rape of an eight-year-old girl. The suspect was caught red red-handed by the family in his room. It’s alleged that on 20 June 2024 at about 18:00, the neighbour reportedly send the young girl to a nearby shop to buy him cigarettes and a box of matches. The family became worried as their daughter failed to return home. It was further reported that the girl usually return home after being sent to the shop however, this time, she did not come home. They went looking for her at their neighbour’s house and found both undressed inside the suspect’s room. She related to her family what happened. They reported the incident to the police. A case of attempted rape is being investigated. The suspect has been arrested and is expected to appear before the Ficksburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 24 June 2024, facing charge of attempted rape. As parents, we have the responsibility to protect our children. Adults should refrain from sending minor children to shops to buy things like cigarettes or alcohol. It’s also against the law to sell minors cigarettes or liquor at their age. Ends
