Media Statement NORTH WEST – Masoetsa Ramaena (46) was sentenced to eight years imprisonment on a charge of possession of unwrought gold when he appeared before the Klerksdorp Regional Court on 13 June 2024. His sentence emanates from the intelligence driven operation that was conducted by the Klerksdorp based Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation team in collaboration with the South African Police Service Special Task Force at CAPM#2 in October 2021. During the operation, illegal miners who occupied the dormant shaft were arrested. A shoot-out ensued between the suspects and police leaving six illegal miners fatally wounded. Numerous firearms, illegal mining paraphernalia, vehicles and food were seized during the operation. Ramaena who was one of the arrested, was found in possession of unwrought gold.
Following a series of court appearances, the accused pleaded guilty to possession of unwrought gold and was sentenced to eight years imprisonment.
