Media Statement FREE STATE – The Bethlehem Regional Court yesterday sentenced the accused person, Motlalepula John Mokoena (41) of Steilfontein Farm in the district of Petrus Steyn to 18 years of direct imprisonment for the murder of his girlfriend, Dipuo Maria Modibedi (33) on a farm during July 2023.
On 16 July 2023 at about 22:10, police were informed of the horrible discovery of the body of a female who was lying on the farm road. It was discovered that it’s the body of the late Maria Modibedi, who was assaulted badly by her boyfriend, who was also found and arrested. The woman was found with a fatal open wound on her head, sticks left next to her body, and was declared dead by the ambulance personnel. A case of murder was opened, and the accused was arrested. He appeared before the Petrus Steyn Magistrate Court on 19 July 2023 and remained in custody awaiting trial until he was found guilty on 11 June 2024 and sentenced to 18 years of direct imprisonment by Bethlehem Regional Court.
