Media Statement NELSPRUIT – Members of the South African Police Service assigned to carry out duties in relation to Operation Vala Umgodi are doing their utmost best to bring illegal mining to its knees. As a result, other relevant government departments as well as private mining entities were roped in to bring forth their expertise in the fight against illegal mining. A collaboration engagement was held by the team at Mbombela on Wednesday, 04 June 2024, in conjunction with the department of Home Affairs, the department of Rural Development Land and Environmental Affairs, the National Procecution Authority, the department of Mineral Resources and Energy, Ehlanzeni District Municipality Disaster Management, York Timbers and SSG Security from Barberton mines. The engagement, that has been coordinated by the Mpumalanga Tactical Joint Operational Centre (Tacjoc) will hopefully assist in ensuring more prosecution for illegal miners in the province. After the engagement, all stakeholders are more determined to work collaboratively with the Police in eradicating the industry of illegal mining in the province. There are other crimes associated with illegal mining activities and these include murders, robberies and rapes, of which Police have to deal with on daily basis.
The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, has applauded the team for the engagement held with stakeholders in the fight against illegal mining. “We welcome the initiative and believe that with more boots on the ground, we will win the battle against illegal mining,” said the General.
