Media Statement MANGAUNG – Provincial Anti-Gang Unit members, while on standby for the National Elections, conducted stop and searches in and around Mangaung and arrested people for dealing in drugs and recovered an unlicensed firearm and an airgun after an attempted robbery. While the rest of the operatives were deployed to ensure national elections were safe, free and fair, Provincial Anti-Gang Unit members were strategically deployed as a standby unit for any eventualities. While on standby, on 27 May 2024 at about 22:00, members conducted stop and searches in and around Mangaung and the team proceeded to Bloemspruit and came across a suspicious male in the street. The 34-year-old suspect was searched, and mandrax tablets as well as cash were found in his possession. Further information led members to a house in Peterswartz, where the 33-year-old female was arrested after she was found in possession of mandrax drugs and an undisclosed amount of cash. One more male, aged 29, was arrested after he was found in possession of Tik and an undisclosed amount of cash. All three were arrested for dealing in drugs. On 28 May 2024 at about 20:00, members received information about a foreign national who is allegedly in possession of an illegal firearm in Naledi Square, Bloemspruit. The team rushed to the house and two males, aged 27 and 18, were arrested after a 9mm pistol and ammunition were found hidden in the house. The 18-year-old was taken to a youth centre and the adult was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. While patrolling, the team provided backup to a member in Heidedal after he witnessed an attempted business robbery. With the assistance from the Anti-Gang Unit members, one suspect was arrested after a brief chase and was found in possession of a firearm. It was later discovered that it was an airgun. He was arrested for attempted business robbery, possession of an unlicensed firearm, and contravention of the Immigration Act. On 29 May 2024 at about 19:30, two suspects aged 26 and 29, were arrested after they were found with Mandrax tablets and an undisclosed amount of cash. On 30 May 2024, 34-year-old illegal immigrant was arrested during a stop and search in Peterswartz after members found crystal meth and mandrax tablets in his possession. The detained will appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court soon for their respective charges. Ends
