Media Statement KIMBERLEY – During the execution of Operation Shanela, members from Marydale Visible Policing unit arrested a 34-year-old male, who was in possession of an unlicensed firearm. On 25 May 2024 at about 20:00, the police spotted an alleged hitch hiker being dropped off at the N10 crossing near Marydale. The suspect started running through the veld when he spotted the police and dropped a bag. Police gave chase and arrested the suspect and found a firearm and an empty magazine wrapped in white cloth inside the bag. The suspect was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and should be appearing in court soon. The Provincial Commissioner of the Northern Cape, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola commended the Marydale Visible Policing unit for their vigilance and commitment to addressing the proliferation of illegal firearms in the Northern Cape Province. She reiterated that the police is committed in ensuring the safety and security of the inhabitants and we will intensify our efforts. Ends
