Media Statement ZWELITSHA – The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene joins the family in blue as they mourn the tragic loss and serious injury of our dedicated police officers, who were involved in an accident while transporting prisoners to court on Friday, 24 May 2024. It is alleged that at about 09:30, the tragic accident occurred on the R63 between Pearston and Graaff Reinett when the police vehicle suffered a tyre burst and left the road, somersaulting several times. The members were transporting two waiting trial prisoners from Somerset East magistrate court to Graaff-Reinet Correctional Services when the accident occurred. A Warrant Officer, aged 59 and a 41-year-old Constable died on the scene while another Sergeant, aged 42 sustained serious injuries. The injured member and the two prisoners were taken to hospital for treatment. A case of Culpable Homicide was opened for investigation. Lt Gen Mene sends out condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the fallen and injured officers. ‘We wish a speedy recovery to the injured member. Our deepest condolences to the families as they mourn the tragic loss of their loved ones. The untimely deaths of the police officers has shocked the SAPS Family, reminding us of the dangers that police officers face every day. We honour their services made in the line of duty and their sacrifices in keeping our communities safe,’ added Lt Gen Mene. Ends
