Media Statement CAPE TOWN – Gender-based volence against women and children remains a priority for the Western Cape police who will go the extra mile to bring perpetrators to book. This was again demonstrated by detectives attached to Delft Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit when they ensured that two offenders were removed from their community. Initial reports reveal that on Monday 01 August 2016 at about 12:00, the 9-year-old victim was at her grandmother’s house when the 38-year-old suspect called her into her brother’s room where he raped her. The suspect, Gilbert Botha was found guilty of the mentioned charge and was eventually sentenced to life imprisonment by the Parow Regional Court on 03 April 2024. In a separate incident on 21 October 2021 at around 17:30, a 29-year-old woman was assaulted with a spade by her 25-year-old boyfriend. He then raped her where after he took and left her at dumping site. He was arrested shortly after the incident. The 25-year-old Luzavain Van Niekerk was found guilty by the Parow Regional court and sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment on the attempted murder charge and life imprisonment on the rape charge. The Western Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembisile Patekile welcomed the judgement imposed on the two suspects and commended the investigating officers, Detective Warrant Officer Ayanda Ndaba and Detective Warrant Officer Mark Haywood for their meticulous investigations. He also praised the prosecuting team at the Parow Regional Court. Ends
