Media Statement CAPE TOWN – The proliferation of firearms, which contributes to the commission of serious and violent crime, remains a major focus of the SAPS. Continued efforts by our members on the ground yielded positive results when members attached to Operation Restore, Maitland Flying Squad, and the Anti-Economical and Extortion Task Team recovered several firearms and ammunition from the streets. On Sunday, 19 May 2024, members attached to Operation Restore received information on a shooting incident in Warwick Crescent, Eersterivier. The members responded to the address and spotted four suspicious looking men, sitting under a tree. The members stopped and conducted a thorough search of the suspects and their surroundings. They found a .38 Special revolver and ammunition inside a blue Cremora box. Four males aged between 20 and 35 were arrested on a charge of possession of a prohibited firearm and illegal possession of ammunition. They are due to appear in the Blue Downs Magistrates’ court once charged. In an unrelated matter, members of Maitland Flying Squad received information about a firearm at an address in Milnerton area. The members attended to the address that belongs to a deceased person where they found a Rossi .38 special revolver. The Firearm was handed in at Milnerton SAPS. On 19 May 2024, at about 14:30, members attached to the Anti Economical and Extortion Task Team joined forces with Crime Intelligence in the Mfuleni area, conducting stop and searches at Bosasa Temporals, Mfuleni. They pulled over a taxi and found the suspect, who is a taxi owner, in possession of a firearm and ammunition. The 41-year-old man was later taken to his residence, where two more firearms were recovered with several magazines, 136 rounds of ammunition and three cellular telephones. The suspect could not provide a valid license for the possession of the firearms and ammunition. The exhibits were all booked in for safe keeping, and the suspect was detained. On further investigation and profiling of the suspect, it was discovered that he was wanted on a case with three counts of murder and four counts of attempted murder registered at Delft SAPS in May 2024. The suspect will make his court appearance in the Blue Downs Magistrates’ court once charged. Ends
