Media Statement NELSPRUIT – A woman, aged 43 appeared at the Nkomazi Magistrate’s court in Tonga on Friday, 10 May 2024 on a charge of murder. The court appearance was after the murder of a woman on Wednesday, 08 May 2024 then the suspect arrested the next day (09 May 2024), subsequent to the discovery of her body laying on the street in Tonga. The female victim is estimated to be in her late twenties and during the discovery of her lifeless body, Police noticed some visible bruises on her body, which immediately pointed to the men and women in Blue, that there was a foul play hence a murder case was opened. According to information at Police disposal, the victim was employed as a domestic worker, and she apparently went to the suspect’s house in relation to some kind of transfer of cash, the subject that is part of Police investigation. Be as it may, the victim was allegedly assaulted until she lost consciousness then reportedly dumped on the street. The murder case is been investigated by the Police at Tonga and the probe led members to their suspect who was apprehended. Police are also in pursuit of two other individuals, believed to be entangled in this case. All received information will be treated as confidential and callers may opt to remain anonymous. Meanwhile during the court appearance of the suspect, identified as Lucy Clara Makhabane the case was postponed to 15 May 2024 and it is expected that, on that day, she will apply for bail. For now she remains in custody.
The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela has commended members for the swift arrest of the suspect with the hope that justice will be served for the slain victim.
