Media Statement NELSPRUIT – Two suspects, aged 35 and 47, were arrested by the police in Mmametlake and are expected to appear at the Mbimbana Magistrate’s Court today, Thursday 09 May 2024, after allegedly raping a 68-year-old elderly woman at Mmamethlake. The terrible incident, which has been strongly condemned by the Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, occurred during the night on Monday, 06 May 2024. According to information, the pensioner was returning from a nearby tuckshop when she found two men waiting at the gate of her residential place. It is alleged that they forcefully dragged her to a nearby bushes, despite her efforts to call for help. Allegations further indicate that the two men took turn raping her. During this incident, it is said that some members of the community came to her rescue and the woman was later taken to a nearby medical facility for treatment. The Police were informed about the incident and a case of rape was opened for investigation purposes, which led to the arrest of the two suspects, hence their court appearance today. The Provincial Commissioner reassured the public that police will ensure that investigators do due diligence in this case in probing this heinous crime. “We assigned our investigators from the Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit to investigate and in collaboration with the National Prosecution Authority (NPA), we are hoping for a conviction as well as harsher sentence for the perpetrators,” said the General.
