Media Statement
The incident about the shooting of Mokadi was uncovered after concerned and patriotic citizens noticed a crime scene in what appeared to have been a hijacking incident on the R42 offramp in the Delmas policing precinct. They then urgently alerted police about what they saw and police immediately reacted on the given information. On their response, they spotted a maroon sedan fitting the description of the vehicle involved in the alleged hijacking. When the suspects realised that police were on their tail, they began shooting at them and police retaliated. The suspects’ vehicle collided with another vehicle belonging to a security company and four suspects alighted from their vehicle and ran away in different directions. In the vehicle, police found a police owned firearm which was reported stolen in Thabazimbi, cash and other items which will be used for investigation purposes. Police then proceeded further to the first scene where it was reported that there was some kind of a hijacking which took place. When they arrived, they were greeted by a shocking scene where a SAPS member, Sergeant Mokadi, attached to the Springs Railway Police as well as another female victim shot. Another female passenger (not the one shot) told police that they were offered a lift by Sergeant Mokadi when they were attacked by the suspects. Police urgently summoned for medical assistance however, Sergeant Mokadi was declared dead on the scene and the female passenger was taken to hospital at which her condition is reportedly as serious but stable. The perpetrators are still at large and Police urge anyone with information that may help in finding the suspects to contact Detective Lieutenant Colonel Isak Mokwana from the Directorate of Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) at 082 461 9278. Learning about this sad incident, Lieutenant General Manamela sent words of condolences to the family of the deceased as well as wishing a speedy recovery to the injured lady whom it has since been discovered that she is a Mozambican by origin. The General has further instructed the responsible members tasked with the investigation, to work tirelessly and make sure that the suspects are swiftly brought to book so that justice can be served on behalf of the victims. “Killing a police officer displays a sign of gross disrespect to the state,” said the General.
