Former Idols South Africa winner turned preacher Khaya Mthethwa has made headlines over his recent comments about co-parenting with his ex-wife, Ntando Kunene.
The singer split from his former Miss South Africa after two years of marriage following a whirlwind romance.
On social media, many users have reminded the performer of his “I don’t want to be married” video confession.
KHAYA MTHETHWA: WHAT DID HE SAY?
Over the weekend, Khaya Mthethwa courted controversy when he tweeted about some of the struggles of being a divorced dad. He posted: “Count it a blessing to live with your child… drop offs are so heartbreaking”.
Of co-parenting with his ex Ntando Kunene, he told a follower: “I still struggle with the guilt.
“My heart always breaks when they start crying.”
The former Idols SA winner received little to no sympathy from X followers, who accused him of “breaking his own home.”
This followed his comments in a viral video of him saying: “I said to God, I don’t think I want to be married anymore. I told God that in January [2018]. I’m like, ‘I think I’m done.’”.
In December 2017, Khaya Mthethwa married former Miss SA Ntando Kunene. At the time, the couple had dated for just three months.
Two years later, the couple – who welcomed a son, Oyinkosi – announced their shock split in a vague statement.
According to Khaya, the new marriage was fraught with “challenges” the couple could not overcome. While neither Ntando nor Khaya has ever mentioned those challenges, the latter has been accused of being unfaithful in the past.
DIVORCE, DRINKING AND DEPRESSION
Speaking on YFM in 2021, Khaya Mthethwa revealed that after his divorce, he turned to drinking and was diagnosed with depression.
He said: “I am 33, divorced, been through alcohol, been through just trying to numb the pain. I have struggled because how are you going to be able to speak to your generation if you have never been through what they are going through?”.
Speaking to Mpoomy Ledwaba, Khaya added that COVID-19 had also exacerbated his mental health.
He said in her Wisdom & Wellness podcast: “We broke up, then we went into lockdown. I was alone in my house for eight months … Thank God I didn’t have to go to church because I would have collapsed”.
WHO HAS THE SINGER AND PREACHER DATED?
Allegations of Khaya Mthethwa’s infidelity likely stemmed from his previous high-profile relationships. In fact, many social media users have compared the gospel star to the philandering businessman Edwin Sodi.
Before Ntando came into the picture, TimesLive claims Khaya allegedly dated Isibaya actress Nomzamo Mbatha in 2015. The relationship was reportedly serious, with Khaya allegedly paying lobola for the beauty.
According to Sunday World, Khaya split from actress Nomzamo Mbatha in 2015 after allegedly having an affair with her best friend and Isibaya co-star Jessica Nkosi.
Celebrity bloggers have also alleged that Khaya Mthethwa has been linked to influencers and slay queens Mathapelo Khoza and Siphosethu Nkosi in recent months.
