Media Statement WESTERN CAPE – The proliferation of firearms which contributes to the commission of serious and violent crime, remains a major focus of SAPS. Continued efforts by our members on the ground yielded positive results when members attached to Mitchell’s Plain and George SAPS confiscated firearms and arrested six suspects for the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. On Monday, 06 May 2024 at about 21:00, upon receiving information from the community regarding a firearm that is kept at address at Garcia Street, Tafelsig, Mitchells Plain, members attached to Mitchel’s plain SAPS immediately reacted and visited the mentioned address. On arrival at the said address, the members found a 34-year-old man on the premises and ensued with a thorough search of the Wendy house situated on the same premises. During the search the members discovered a 38 special revolver with ammunition which resulted in the arrests of the suspect who faces a charge of the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. The suspect is scheduled to appear in the Mitchell’s Plain Magistrates’ court on Wednesday, 08 May 2024. Meanwhile, on Monday 06 May 2024 at about 01:30 members attached to George SAPS conducted a vehicle checkpoint on the corners of Rand Street and PW Botha Boulevard in Tamsui Industria, George. They spotted and pulled over a Toyota Etios with five occupants aged between 20 and 35. Upon searching the occupants and the vehicle the members discovered a firearm and ammunition on the driver side floor. None of the occupants could produce a valid firearm licence nor ownership. Subsequently, all five occupants were arrested and detained for the illegal possession of a firearm. The five suspects are scheduled to appear in the George Magistrates’ court today, Tuesday, 07 May 2024. Ends
