Media Statement KIMBERLEY – The SAPS welcomes the 20 years’ prison sentence that was handed down to Jason Witbooi (23) for robbery, theft, house breaking and theft on 06 May 2024, in the Richmond Regional Court. The first theft incident occurred in November 2020 when Wibooi intruded a house in Richmond, grabbed a cellphone from a female, and fled the scene. The second incident involved a house breaking and theft incident that occurred in February 2022 when police spotted Witbooi with the stolen goods in Richmond. He dropped the bag of stolen goods and fled, but was later arrested. The case was provisionally withdrawn and Witbooi was later released from prison. The third incident occurred when Jason Witbooi robbed a 16-year-old male at knifepoint of his 20kg chicken on 09 May 2023. He was arrested the following day and remained in prison. He was sentenced as follows on 06 May 2024: Count 1: theft in 2020: 5 years’ imprisonment Count 2: House breaking and theft in 2022: 5 years’ imprisonment Count 3: Robbery: 15 years’ imprisonment Count 1 and Count 2 will run concurrently. The Provincial Commissioner of the Northern Cape, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola commended Richmond SAPS investigation officers, Detective Sergeant Stephanie Koen, Detective Constable Rodney Julies and the Colesberg CR & CSM for their superb teamwork that led to this outstanding sentence.
