Media Statement POTCHEFSTROOM – A 41-year-old son is expected to appear before the Taung Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 6 May 2024, for the alleged contravention of a Protection Order under the Domestic Violence Act, 1998 (Act No. 116 of 1998). It is alleged that on Thursday evening, 2 May 2024, the accused came home and assaulted his 73-year-old mother in her house at Matolong Village, Taung. The incident occurred after a protection order was earlier granted against her 41-year-old son. The son was arrested on Friday, 3 May 2024, shortly after the incident was reported to the police. The suspect will be appearing before the Taung Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 6 May 2024.
The North West Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena said it is sad that an elderly mother was attacked by her own son who is supposed to protect her. He condemned the incident in the strongest possible terms and said police will continue to protect the most vulnerable and bring the alleged perpetrators to book.
