Media Statement WESTERN CAPE – Members of the South African Police Service committed to remove firearms from the streets landed suspects behind bars for the illegal possession of firearms on Friday evening. Members attached to Operation Shanela were busy with stop and search operations in Tafelsig, Mitchell’s Plain when they searched a suspicious looking man who acted nervous when he saw the police vehicles. The members searched him and found a .38 Special revolver with ammunition in his possession. He was arrested for the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. In an unrelated matter, members of Somerset West police arrested an adult male for the illegal possession of a firearm in Naaulands Street, Riemvasmaak. They received information about an armed suspect walking in the road. The members followed up the information and apprehended the suspect. A 9mm pistol with ammunition was found in his backpack.
The suspects will make their respective court appearances in the Mitchell’s Plain and Somerset West Magistrates’ courts on Monday.
