Thank you Programme Director
Good morning to all of you gathered here today. It is my singular honour to take this opportunity to welcome you here at the eManguzi Police Station as we continue full steam ahead with our efforts to bring Policing Services closer to the people. This Police Station is a beacon of hope for the community in the fight against crime. With that said, the SAPS continues to clamp down on cross border crimes and ensure everyone in the community has increased feelings of safety. As many of you are aware, this Police Station is located around the Kosi Bay Border Post which connects South Africa and Mozambique. Just last month, we met in Mozambique under the leadership of Minister of Police, General Bheki Cele and Minister of Interior from the Republic of Mozambique, General Pedro Ronda. The aim was to strengthen Police interventions to combat transnational crimes whereupon we signed a Joint Action Plan in Mozambique earlier last month. The Joint Action Plan was signed after a bilateral meeting led by both our Ministers who are present here today which spells out activities each of our countries will undertake to combat transnational crimes. The official opening of this Police Station is one of the many ways which we are employing to enhance our efforts in the fight against transnational crimes which if not decisively dealt with, threaten the stability of our region. Border security is one of the main focus areas that the eManguzi Police Station will strategically pay attention to due to the close proximity with the Kosi Bay Border Post. Since our collaboration with our Mozambican Police counterparts, communities around this area have registered their appreciation following the policing interventions that have restored law and order. This Police Station has been operational for quite some time now, and has registered commendable successes in the fight against crime, including cross border crimes. This Station works closely with Crime Intelligence within the SAPS in order to locate most wanted criminals thus resulting in approximately 130 hijacked vehicles handed back to lawful owners. These are just some of the many successes the eManguzi Police Stations has registered. Ladies and gentlemen, we are happy that this Police Station is here to serve you and that it is well capacitated with adequate resources needed to fight crime and ensure all people in and around this policing precinct are and feel safe. The SAPS is hard at work to build more Police Stations across the country to ensure we bring Policing services closer to the people. Just last week, we were opening the Gamalakhe and Donnybrook Police Stations here in KwaZulu-Natal. In the past two days, we opened Melmoth Police Station and KwaDabhazi Police Station. Bringing Policing Services closer to communities puts the SAPS in a better position to achieve its Constitutional objectives as enshrined in Section 205 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, which states the objectives of the SAPS are to prevent, combat and investigate crime; maintain public order; protect and secure inhabitants of South Africa and their property; and uphold and enforce the law. We call upon you as community members to work together with the Police in this station to fight crime. In order for Police Officers in this station to win the fight against crime, they need your collaboration as community members. All community members can be our eyes and ears because you as community members, know better than we do what happens in your communities. For this reason, we need to work together to ensure everyone in the community feels safe. With those few words, we welcome you here today and we are happy that you could join us as we officially open the eManguzi Police Station. I thank you!
