Media Statement PARKTOWN – The Management of the South African Police Service in Gauteng has noted with concern a video circulating on social media showing community members accusing two police officials in a stationary patrol vehicle of taking bribes from a hawker. The SAPS would like to state that the same community members were called in by the station commander to provide statements in support of their allegation to which they have refused. The hawker who is alleged to be bribing the officials has refuted the claims. The vehicle seen on the video was in fact patrolling along that street when a man, seen on the video, jumped in front of it and the driver stopped. The man started shouting at the members while other community members started gathering next to the vehicle. Upon these allegations being hurled at the officials, the sergeant and constable remained restrained and did not engage the community members until they were able to continue with their patrols. All members on patrols must attend to complaints, conduct stop and searches (vehicles and persons), engage hawkers, security officers at shopping centres, malls, filing stations. These are the activities that they have to account on when their shift ends. The activities allow police officials in every precinct to develop a working relationship with the community members they serve in order to generate community based intelligence. Communities are urged to contact the SAPS Crime Stop number on 08600 10111, to report any corruption tip-offs. All tip-offs received about corruption are referred to the SAPS Counter Intelligence and Anti-Corruption units. Ends
