Media Statement NEWLANDS – On Monday afternoon, members of the Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) successfully apprehended an individual who was in possession of drugs in Newlands. The arrest took place along Oosthuizen Road, where AGU members were patrolling the area. At approximately 14:00, AGU members noticed a suspicious male walking along the road. Upon noticing the presence of the police vehicle, the male individual hastily began to flee on foot. A brief chase ensued, with AGU officers in pursuit, until the suspect was eventually apprehended. Upon searching the suspect, AGU members discovered two ziplock bags in his possession. Suspecting illegal narcotics, they promptly opened the bags, revealing a total of nine full tablets and eight halves, believed to be mandrax drugs. Mandrax, also known as “buttons” or “smarties,” is a powerful sedative commonly associated with the illicit drug trade. The 37-year-old suspect was immediately informed of his arrest and transported to the nearest police station. He now faces charges for possession of drugs, a serious offence. The 37-year-old suspect is expected to appear before the respective court later this week for his alleged involvement in drug-related activities. In an effort to build a strong case against the suspect, the seized exhibits will be sent for analysis. The results of the analysis will serve as crucial evidence in the legal proceedings. The successful apprehension of the suspect serves as a testament to the dedication and efficiency of the Anti-Gang Unit in combating drug-related crimes.
