MPUMALANGA – Ali Maratab (40), a Pakistani national, was found guilty and sentenced by the Mbombela Specialised Commercial Crimes court for contravening the provisions of the Customs and Excise Act in Nelspruit On 21 June 2023 at about 09:35, information was received and followed–up regarding shop where illicit cigarettes are being sold. The team comprising of Nelspruit based Serious Commercial Crime Investigation and Customs Enforcement Officials (SARS) conducted an ad-hoc police action operation in terms of Section 252A of the Criminal Procedure Act. Successful “test buys” were conducted by an agent. Search and seizure warrant was authorised and executed on 21 June 2023 at “Nadmad Trading” in Nelspruit. During the search, illicit cigarettes( Remington Gold Blue) were found and confiscated. The accused was arrested and detained. He appeared in court and was released on bail. He attended court on several occasions until he was found guilty and sentenced by the Mbombela Specialised Commercial Crimes court on Thursday, 18 April 2024, as follows: R10 000 fine or 6 months imprisonment, and illicit cigarettes forfeited to the state.
