Media Statement FREE STATE – A driving school instructor, Doctor Moloi (30) and a traffic officer employed as an examiner, Sipho Malinga (45), were found guilty for corruption and sentenced by the Vrede Magistrates’ Court on 10 April 2024. The Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation based in Bethlehem received information about the corrupt activities involving Moloi and Malinga. The police then followed up the information and, during October 2022 and November 2022, an operation was set up which led to a confirmation that Moloi would scout individuals who were in need of learner’s licenses and hand over their details to Malinga to ensure they pass their tests at a fee. Warrants of arrest were issued for the duo on 22 June 2023 and were subsequently arrested on 04 July 2023 and appeared in court the same day. The court granted each of them R2000 bail. Doctor Moloi was instructed by the court to pay a fine of R12 000.00 or undergo five years’ imprisonment. Half of the sentence is suspended for a period of three years on condition that he is not found guilty of the same offense during the period of suspension. Moloi was further instructed to pay an additional amount of R2000 into the CARA account as per Section 18 application. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm. Sipho Malinga was instructed to pay a fine of R11 600.00 or undergo six years’ imprisonment. Half of the sentence is suspended for five years’ on condition that he is not found guilty of the same offense during the period of suspension. He was further ordered to pay an amount of R2 200 into the CARA account as per Section 18 application. Malinga was also declared unfit to possess a firearm. Ends
