Media Statement CAPE TOWN – The Western Cape Provincial Commissioner Thembisile Patekile, applauded the investigating team attached to Kraaifontein SAPS for an excellent investigation which led to the conviction and sentencing of Xola Nikelo. Initial reports suggested that on Thursday 21 September 2017, at approximately 21:59, the deceased Mamelo Maloi was hijacked of her car and fatally on the scene. On the same day, within 15 minutes after the commission of the crime, the hijacked vehicle was spotted by the vigilant police members who performed crime prevention patrols in the Philippi East policing precinct. The members recovered the vehicle and arrested the 27-year-old accused on charges of murder, robbery aggravated (hijacking). The investigating team pursued all the relevant information at its disposal in a bid to build a strong case. The suspect was found guilty on both charges after a lengthy court process. He was presented with a lengthy jail term by the Blue Downs Regional court on Wednesday 10 April 2024. On the murder count the suspect was sentenced to 15 years’ direct imprisonment and 10 years’ direct imprisonment for the robbery aggravated (hijacking). Ends
